The SURL (software Usability Research Laboratory) is a goof place to join in UI Questions. Their site is very useful (while beeing very usable, of course), and the criteria for optimal web design set up by Michael Bernard of course often refer to Nielsen & Colleagues. Formulations like "Users often may "instinctively" ignore the graphics that are presented on a website" really astonish me. It seems that all those studies take it for granted that images are _additionaly_ on a website. What about the many websites that use "graphics" (please specify this owrd!) as a well-conceptualized and designed aid (if as cognitive means or as visual models and metaphors?)??
