Scalable interface design ensures that interface development takes account of the need to change over time, providing solutions that are flexible and thus “future-proof” to some extent. Too often complex interface designs require a complete overhaul when even the smallest change is required in the functionality of the application or site in question. Building “scalable” interfaces in the first place will save time and cost in the long term - and make coping with upgrades easier for your customers.

Visualizing Historical Information in Three Dimensions
This thesis considers the form and function of the visual communication of historical information in computer-based media. By applying new visual techniques derived from traditional graphic design and cinema, such as infinite zoom, translucency, and animation, the traditional timeline is transformed into a dynamic, three-dimensional framework for the interactive presentation of historical information.
I argue that current static and non-interactive presentation limit the ability of the designer to visualize complex historical information. Dynamic, interactive design solutions address the communicative goals of allowing seamless micro and macro readings of information at several levels of detail and from multiple points of view.
Experimental software for visualizing the history of photography was created to examine and compare various visualization techniques. Selected examples from the system illustrate advantages and disadvantages of various methods of dynamic visualization and interaction.

EML Deep Map Home INTELLIGENT, MOBILE, MULTI-MEDIA AND FULL OF KNOWLEDGE?
Deep Map is the first research project at the EML. In the framework of Deep Map, we develop the prototype of a digital personal mobile tourist guide which integrates research from various areas of computer science: geo-information systems, data bases, natural language processing, intelligent user interfaces, knowledge representation, and more. The goal of Deep Map is to develop information technologies that can handle huge heterogeneous data collections, complex functionality and a variety of technologies, but are still accessible for untrained users.
